Adding lexical items and themes to your lexicon is easy. There are just few required steps. Adding themes is optional, but recommended. As you build your lexicon you may want to take advantage of all the features of the program by adding optional data to some lexical items. Here, we mention just a few optional fields. See Creating and editing lexical items in the manual for more details about lexical item data.
Adding a Lexical Item
| Step 1: | In the main program window, click the  button underneath the lexical item list. This action will populate the panel on the right side of the window with blank a lexical item. |
| Step 2: | Enter the lexical item text in the textbox at the top of the panel. The lexical item text is the word or expression that you’re trying to learn. |
| Step 3: (optional) |
Enter text in the Pronunciation textbox that gives you phonetic clues on how to pronounce the lexical item. |
| Step 4: | Select the button that corresponds to this item’s lexical type. For example, select Verb (or its equivalent) if the lexical item is a verb. |
| Step 5: | Enter a translation for this item in the Translation textbox. If the lexical item has multiple translations then separate them with semicolons. |
| Step 6: (optional) |
Enter any comments in the Comments textbox. |
| Step 7: (optional) |
Enter a personal example underneath the tab that says Personal Examples. A personal example is 1 or 2 sentences that use the lexical item in context. This exercise builds memory associations and helps you recall the lexical item later. |
| Step 8: | Click the Edit button located at the bottom left of the panel to indicate that you are finished. Now you’ll see the new lexical item in the lexical item list. |
Defining a Theme
| Step 1: | In the main program window, click the button underneath the theme list. A New Theme dialog will appear. The dialog shows 4 textboxes. |
| Step 2: | In the upper left textbox, type in a theme name in the language you’re learning. |
| Step 3: | In the upper right textbox, type in the theme name in your native language. Optionally, you can type the same name that you used in step 2 if you prefer not to use your native language within your lexicon. |
| Step 4: | You don’t need to enter any sub-theme text and indeed you can’t. Later, you’ll be able create sub-themes that are attached to existing themes. For now, just click Ok. The new theme will appear in theme list of the main window. |
Adding a Lexical Item to a Theme
There are several ways to add a lexical item to a theme. Assuming you want to add the lexical item you just created to the theme you just created then the process is simple. Click on the lexical item in the lexical item list and drag it over to the theme in the theme list. Now, when viewing that lexical item, you’ll notice the theme has been assign to it. When you click on [Unassigned] in the theme list then this lexical item won’t be shown in the lexical item list because you’re only viewing items that haven’t been assigned to any theme. However, if you click on the theme then you’ll see the item in the list because its been assigned to that particular theme.
Alternatively, if the theme already exists before you create the lexical item then you can select the theme from the list and then click the add lexical item button. In this case the new item will automatically be assign to the theme that’s selected.
