Generating an Export File

There are 2 catagories of export files that you can generate, one containing an entire lexicon and one containing select lexical items. Both types of files are generated using the Export dialog. To initiate the process for exporting an entire lexicon, the lexicon need only be opened. To initiate the process for exporting lexical items, you first must select the items from the lexical item list in the main application window. After that, open the Export dialog by selecting Export under the File menu.

Using the dialog choose what you want to export: an entire lexicon or select lexical items. When exporting an entire lexicon you have the option of including tests or not. When exporting a list of lexical items you have the option of automatically including items that are linked to the items you've selected. This means that if the items you've selected contain roots, synonyms, antonyms, phonetically similar items, or related items that aren't a part of the selection then these linked items will still be included in the export file. If this option isn't selected then some exported items might not contain all their original data.

Whether you're exporting an entire lexicon or a list of lexical items, you can choose to include or not include themes and personal examples. Both are included by default. However, keep in mind that these might only have significance for the author of the lexicon. Therefore, in some cases it's better to excluded them.

Once all export options have been set, clicking the Ok button will open a file dialog that will prompt you for the name and location of the export file. If you're exporting selected lexical items then pay attention to the File Format at the bottom of the dialog. Here you'll have the choice of exporting a .plx file or a .csv file. To understand the different between these file formats see Lexical Item Import/Export File Formats.
