Taking and Printing Tests

To take a test that you've generated, go to the Test menu and select Take Test. This will bring up a dialog containing a list of tests. Select the test you want to take. If you want the questions to be shuffled then select the Shuffle Questions checkbox. Otherwise, the question order will be the same each time you take the test. Once you're ready, click Ok to begin the test. This causes the dialog and main window to disappear and be replaced with the test window, which is showing the first question.

If you know or think you might know the answer then type it in (or select it in the case of a multiple choice test) and click the right arrow button to go to the next question. If you're checking answers as you go then you'll be given immediate feedback. A correct answer allows you to continue to the next question and, if your test preferences are set to play sounds, you will hear a double bell. If you answered incorrectly then a red X will appear for a couple seconds near the top of the window and you'll hear a buzzer if sounds are enabled. At this point, the correct answer is shown or, if the test allows for multiple answer attempts, then you will have another opportunity to answer. If you decide you don't know the answer then you can press the ? button at any time and it will be revealed. You can then proceed to the next question.

If you are not checking answers as you go then after you input your answer, click the right arrow button to proceed to the next question. A left arrow button to take you back to the previous question will be located next to the right arrow button if this option is enabled in the test preferences. You can exit the test at any time by pressing the exit button in the lower left corner of the window.

Once you've progressed through all the questions the test results will be shown. Here you can see which questions you answered correctly and which ones were incorrect. You also see the average score for this test, the last score, and the average difficulty of the items in the test. After you've reviewed the results, you can exit the test window and go back to the main window or you can take the test over by clicking the newly visible loop arrow button.

An alternative to taking tests on the computer is printing tests. This option does not allow the program to automatically track item difficulty, but it is convenient when you prefer to do some studying away from the computer. Selecting a test to print is a similar to taking a test. Go to the Test menu and select Print Test. The subsequent dialog is almost the same as the one used for taking a test. One difference is that there is an additional dropdown at the top of the window that allows you to specify if you want to print the test and its answer key, just the test, or just the answers. You may notice that some tests are missing from the Print Test dialog. This is because some tests cannot be printed, audio based tests for example.

In both dialogs there is a padlock next to each test. A closed yellow padlock means that the test has 100% integrity. Such a test is the same today as the day it was created. A closed gray padlock means the test has lost integrity, but hasn't been taken or printed since then. It is still locked. If you try to take or print a test in this state you'll be prompted to unlock it. You will be allowed to take this test only if you say yes. An unlocked test is indicated with an open yellow padlock. These tests either have questions missing or questions that have changed. Test statistics like the average score have less meaning when a test has been unlocked. This is because some past test scores used to calculate the average score applied to a slightly or significantly different test, depending on how much the test has changed.
